Inside a Typical Blocked Sewer Job

Sewage backing up at the lowest drain. This is usually the first sign something is wrong further down the line, not just at the fixture itself.

An overflow relief gully doing its job. If yours has released water into the yard, it has done exactly what it was built to do, and the actual blockage is still further along.

Root intrusion in an older sewer line. Once roots find a cracked joint, they keep growing, and clearing them properly is a different job to a routine clean.

Signs You Need Blocked Sewer

A sewer problem usually announces itself before it becomes an emergency, if you know what to look for.

  • Gurgling sounds from fixtures when water runs elsewhere in the house.
  • The lowest drain or fixture in the house draining slower than everything else.
  • An odour near an outdoor drain or gully that was not there before.
  • More than one fixture backing up at roughly the same time.
  • An overflow relief gully releasing water into the yard.

Any one of these on its own is worth a call. Two or three together, especially several fixtures acting up at once, usually means the blockage sits further along the shared line rather than at a single fixture.

What We See in Ermington Drains

Ermington's established post-war streets, Atkins Road included, carry mature trees planted decades ago on generous garden lots. Their roots have had plenty of time to spread.

Ermington's older streets still carry their original leafy gardens, and it's tree roots chasing moisture into ageing clay sewer lines that account for most of the blockages we clear around here. It does not take much of an opening for a root to get in. A hairline crack in a tired joint is enough.

Once inside, a root keeps growing toward the moisture and nutrients running through the pipe, and what started as a thread becomes a solid mass blocking the line completely.

Blocks near green space, including the streets around George Kendall Riverside Park, share the same mature street-tree canopy as the rest of Ermington's post-war blocks, which is what keeps the roots coming rather than anything particular to the reserve itself.

It's no reason to avoid a leafy street. It's simply why a camera check earns its keep before a small root problem turns into a full collapse.

What Your Blocked Sewer Quote Depends On

A sewer quote is built around the actual cause of the blockage, never a flat charge regardless of the job.

  • Whether it is a grease or debris clog or an established root intrusion.
  • How deep and how far along the run the blockage sits.
  • Whether the fix is a clear, or a full repair that needs digging.
  • Access to the affected section of the property.

We settle on a price before any work starts, and that's exactly what lands on the invoice once the job is done.

What to Do While You Wait

A few holding actions help while a plumber is on the way. Stop running water into the affected line altogether, including flushing toilets or using washing machines and dishwashers connected to it.

Do not attempt to force a blockage further into the system, and keep children and pets away from any area where wastewater has surfaced. Beyond that, there is nothing you need to sort out yourself.

If it's genuinely just one slow fixture rather than a full back-up, that's a smaller job and less urgent than sewage actually surfacing indoors or outside. Either way, describing what you're seeing when you call helps us bring the right gear the first time.

How the Job Runs and How Long It Takes

  1. Look, then quote. We assess what's happening and put a price on it before anything starts.
  2. Locate the blockage. A camera or targeted check finds exactly where the problem sits.
  3. Clear or repair. Where roots near a street like Atkins Road have taken hold, clearing gets the flow moving again, and cutting the roots back properly is what stops it recurring within weeks.
  4. Confirm it is actually clear. We run water through the system before calling the job finished.

Licensed Work, Done to Standard

We hold NSW Plumbing Licence #465156C, and sewer work is squarely one of the trades it covers. AS/NZS 3500 plumbing standards set out how the work itself gets carried out.

Responsibility for a blockage depends on where it sits. Blockages inside your own private pipework are the property owner's responsibility, while Sydney Water owns the sewer main and the connection point beyond your boundary. We will point out exactly where that boundary falls before recommending any work.

Why Locals Choose Us for Blocked Sewer

Nobody wants a blocked sewer left to sit overnight, and we treat every call that way. A real voice picks up around the clock, and a plumber is usually with you inside the same working day.

Whatever the job turns into once we're in there, the figure you signed off on at the start is what you pay.

Servicing Nearby Homes Too

Ermington's older sewer stock is not confined to one street. We also cover Rydalmere, Dundas Valley and Newington. Where a CCTV drain inspection shows damage rather than a straightforward clog, we will recommend blocked drain repair instead.

Common questions

Blocked Sewer FAQs

The questions we hear most from Ermington homes dealing with a blocked sewer.

Can you do blocked sewer in older homes with clay pipes?

It's one of our more common calls this way. Original earthenware sewer lines are still common under the suburb's post-war streets, and we clear or repair them based on what the camera turns up.

What should I do before the plumber gets here?

Stop using the toilets, sinks and washing machine connected to the affected line until we arrive. Working out exactly where the blockage sits is on us, not you.

Can someone get here today?

In most cases, yes. A blocked sewer jumps the queue on our end, and someone picks up the phone whenever you call, day or night. Ring (02) 9199 2575.

Is blocked sewer covered by your lifetime labour warranty?

Yes. Whatever we do on a sewer line, a routine clear right through to a dug-out repair, carries our lifetime labour warranty afterwards.

What are the signs I need blocked sewer?

Gurgling fixtures when you run water elsewhere, a lowest-point drain that's slower than the rest of the house, and a smell surfacing outside where there wasn't one before are the early giveaways. Actual sewage indoors means it has moved past the early stage.

Will the blockage come back after blocked sewer?

Only if the real cause was left alone. A grease clog is unlikely to return once properly cleared, but a root intrusion in an old joint can come back unless that joint gets repaired, and we will be upfront about which situation is yours.
